Room with a hue
Giving Kitchen cabinets a shot of color turned dull into beautiful
When the only thing wrong with a kitchen is the color of the cabinets, that's cause for rejoicing. It means that the cabinets are of good quality and that the overall layout works just fine so there'll be no need to undertake a total - and totally expensive - remodel. The color challenge can be solved, quickly and without draining the savings account. Here's proof:
In a kitchen where all was well - from the layout to the cabinet construction, the appliances and the lighting - the only thing that the new owners wanted to change was the bland whitewashed look of both the base and the wall cabinets. What the owners envisioned were warmer tones in pastel hues.
To make way for a new finish, the old one had to be stripped off. Since the original finish was lacquer-based, lacquer thinner was needed to dissolve and remove the whitewash. Sanding followed stripping to both smooth and underlaying maple and remove the very last of the old finish. To achieve it I started with 120-grit paper and then moved up to 220-grit to make the maple as smooth as could be.
The wood was all but ready for stain, needing only an application of Minwax Water-Based Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner to ensure even stain absorption. Five minutes after it was applied, the maple was given a final light sanding. The plan for the color makeover involved using two different stains on the wall and floor cabinets. For the cupboards, Minwax Water-Based Wood Stain Parchment was chosen for its soft warmth. For the base cabinets, Minwax Water-Based Wood Stain Driftwood was chosen for its deeper greenish-gray tone, which partnered very well with the Parchment.
The final step, topcoating, was done with Minwax Polycrylic Protective Finish in a semi-gloss sheen.
The room's butcher-block counters also gained an extra measure of beauty and protection from two coats of Minwax Helmsman Spar Urethane in a semi-gloss sheen. So did the oak floors which were lightly sanded and given three coats of Minwax Water-Based Polyurethane For Floors, also in a semi-gloss sheen.
To give the room an added accent, 3-inch-square tiles made of maple-veneered plywood were installed as a backsplash behind the counters.
Stained with Minwax Water-Based Wood Stain Driftwood, Parchment and, for added punch, Winter Moss, they give the kitchen more color and pattern and make a simple makeover look like so much more.
